witchcraft & gender

In 1974, the Council of American Witches gathered to create the document titled “Principles of Wiccan Beliefs”. One particular principle on this list is still argued over amongst traditional and eclectic witches today:

“We conceive of the Creative Power in the universe as manifesting through polarity -- as masculine and feminine -- and that this same Creative Power lies in all people, and functions through the interaction of the masculine and feminine.”

It is important to recognize that this polarity of masculine and feminine can be seen in other religions as well. The issue is with how people interpret this belief and whether or not they harm others because of it.

What I personally wonder is, does this exclude people? There is no mention of transgender and gender non-conforming people in this principle. However, could this principle stand to use some editing? An update, maybe? Is this really still an accurate representation of the witchcraft community? Perhaps this principle is simply too outdated. In the 70s, non-binary was not at all a regularly used term, and there was little acceptance for transgender people. The witchcraft community has grown and changed so much since the writing of this document.

It is also important to take into account that not all people who practice witchcraft are Wiccan, and that eclectic Wicca is very different from traditional Wicca. I personally am not a traditional Wiccan, but I deeply respect those who are, so long as they are not transphobic and using their beliefs to support that transphobia.

I believe recognizing masculinity and femininity and valuing the two equally is a wonderful thing. I personally see the divine in feminine, masculine, and gender neutral forms. The Wiccan concept of the Horned God and the Mother Goddess is important to me as well. However, masculinity and femininity are not the only two types of gender expression. When recognizing femininity and masculinity, it is also important to recognize androgyny, neutrality, duality, and fluidity. I believe this to be true of Christianity as well. Valuing the concept of the creation of men and women is absolutely fine, as long as you also value trans and gender non–conforming people equally.

Therefore, one can be a traditional Wiccan and be transgender or a strong ally to the community. One can also be Christian and be transgender or an ally. Whatever you believe, make sure you respect others.  <3
